Welcome to MATRESCENCE

How are you - really?

The transition to motherhood is known as matrescence. In the same way that it can take years of physical and emotional growth to pass through adolescence into adulthood, motherhood is not born in one moment.

But how much opportunity do we get to adjust to motherhood? Often, we are thrust right in and expected to function, with a completely new body and identity.

Throw in difficult births, stress, lack of support, isolation, and the neurological changes in ours brain and it is no wonder that new motherhood does not always feel like we believe it should.

For some women, anxiety, depression or trauma follows. Or you may just feel low, disconnected from yourself, and struggling to adjust to motherhood. You feel distressed, and maybe like you are letting people down. You feel unhappy, or like something is tainting an otherwise happy time.

You don't have to feel this way.

At a MATRESCENCE retreat, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Reconnect with yourself

  • Heal the growing pains of becoming a mother

  • Overcome difficult experiences

  • Develop a support network

  • Learn the skills to cope with life, be yourself, and connect meaningfully with those around you.

  • Find contentment as a mother

How are you - really?

Was your experience of pregnancy, birth, or the postpartum period stressful or traumatic?

Do you recognise any of these experiences?

  • Maybe you still shudder when you think about the birth and push any thoughts or reminders away.

  • Maybe the idea of another pregnancy fills you with dread. You may even decide you will not have more children based on your experiences.

  • Maybe you don't feel yourself: you are anxious, low or stressed. Or you are running on automatic, burnt out, feeling blunted.

  • Maybe you don't recognise yourself when you look in the mirror, or when you snap at your partner or children.

  • Maybe you feel disconnected from yourself, and sometimes even your loved ones.

If you recognise any one of these thoughts, maybe you feel hopeless that things can feel different.

You CAN feel better:

You CAN feel yourself, empowered, connected, and strong.

Our day- or weekend retreats

At MATRESCENCE retreats:

  1. You will use science-backed methods delivered by renowned doctors of psychology to help you overcome your struggles and connect with your authentic self.

  2. You will access therapy in an intimate and matched group of like-minded women, to take advantage of the group "multiplier effect" to make your therapy even more effective.

  3. You will receive months worth of expert-led therapy in one convenient block (day or weekend): no schedule-juggling as you try to squeeze in a weekly therapy session.

  4. You will be nurtured and looked after for the duration of your time with us: a restorative break for you.

  5. All this is yours at far more affordable rates than weekly therapy: a day retreat only costs the equivalent of five sessions of therapy with a clinical psychologist, but offers 7+ hours, AND includes ongoing, 24/7 peer network support (if desired).
